Introduction to the all-new Koomohost
After many months, Koomohost has over hauled it’s website, hosting plans, business model and technology platform. Why did we make a change? Our goal when we first launched in 2009, has been to offer quality hosting services and we lost sight of that, in trying to compete with other popular hosting companies.
Prior to this change, we were like everyone else, offering a control panel, local hosting components, local email and the strategy to put as many people on our server as possible. One morning, after reading how GoDaddy and EIG (owner of BlueHost) started gobbling the competition, we finally realized that we could not compete at their level. Shared hosting (basic) was simply too competitive and the fight to the bottom for lowest pricing, didn’t match the quality of service we wanted to offer to our customers.

The Cloud architecture has always been a preferred hosting solution, but we needed more reliability, security and performance. Amazon AWS is our perfect answer! It’s global and enterprise level services are affordable enough to pass on this proven cloud technology to our end customers. After much research and training, we built our own cloud and tested it for months. While no cloud is perfect, Amazon AWS proved to be more efficient, reliable and cutting edge.

Now what is the difference?
Performance
Well, to figure it out, we have to define what it means to be “local”. In this instance, “local” is defined as being installed on the server where your website resides.
When software or services are installed locally, there is a single point of failure. If the server went down, then your website, email and contact form messages would not be working.
Performance wise, local running software can impact performance for your website. If you were receiving a ton of email for some reason, your server’s resources would be decreased and slow down the rendering of your website. Or the impact can be reversed, a busy site might affect the email services and clog up notifications or messages.
A local software running on a single server can not compare to an entire global network by Amazon or Google. Amazon Route 53 and Google Apps Gmail is built on a global infrastructure, able to handle incredible work load while maintaining accurate delivery of services.
There are many examples to as to why basic shared hosting could have many issues, just Google it.
At Koomohost, we try to implement best practices as much as possible. By separating the DNS (domain name system), email and System email (e.g messages sent form the site); you have eliminated future issues if any of one of them went down or was overwhelmed by lack of resources.
Security
Security is also improved by separating the DNS and Email. If harmful traffic started to attack Amazon Route 53 or malware email got into Google Apps network; our servers are safe, our customers’ websites are safe.
One feature that is absolutely a huge difference in our secured environment is Amazon’s Virtual Private Cloud. Our server is sitting behind a virtual wall that protects us from outside attacks. There are multiple layers of security implement, for example, our server is housed in a regional data center, then a subnet and data is separated from the actual web server.
Amazon AWS Security, we won’t go into detail about Amazon’s security but you can bet, being the premiere online e-commerce destination, Amazon has to manage bigger security threats than we can imagine. Reliability
Keeping your site online is the number one priority for web hosting companies. Thankful the cloud platforms of today, allow us to provide a redundant service due to the Cloud architecture. What that basically means is instead of using one, single dedicated physical server where your site resides, a cloud server is technically virtualized over a few physical hardware servers. If one fails or is need of repair, another hardware server would take over the work load. Thus, resulting in your website being online for a higher percentage of time.
